Acoustic Engineering Unit for High School
Can You Hear Me Now?
At Oak Ridge High School, after students take AP Physics exam, there is approximately 2 weeks before the end of the school year and final exams. An opportunity exists to extend the curriculum into “sound” beyond the limits of the AP Physics B approved syllabus. “Can You Hear Me Now?” is essentially a short course in acoustic engineering. Students go through technical training with regard to sound production, architectural barriers, tools to enhance sound quality and what constitutes sound quality. Students are tasked with developing a plan to improve the sound in a specific area of the school. Team project results are presented to the class at the time of the final exam.
