Connecting Classrooms to the World

It is vital that our classrooms connect young people to the knowledge and practices that inspire creative thinkers, innovators, and problem solvers that prepare them to accept the responsibilities of global citizenship in an ever changing world.  Connecting Classrooms to the World allows us to explore how schools are integrating content into real-world settings, infusing unique business partnerships into the classroom, and providing experiential learning opportunities for students to more fully investigate the world around them through foundations in STEM education.

As the state’s premier annual STEM event, the Tennessee STEM Innovation Summit brings together leaders, innovators, and champions from across the state that are united by a passion to advance excellence in STEM education for all Tennesseans.

Keynote Presentation

Jack hanna headshot 2“The world is the true classroom.”  – Jack Hanna

Jack Hanna, popular host of the hit television series, Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, is one of America’s most beloved zoologists, naturalists, and adventurers. Hanna, a Knoxville native, began to receive national attention after he became Director of the Columbus Zoo in Columbus, Ohio in 1978. He not only transformed the zoo into a model facility, but through his media savvy, made the Columbus Zoo a household name. He is now a regular guest on shows including “Good Morning America,” “Larry King Live,” “The Late Show With David Letterman,” “Hollywood Squares” and “The Maury Povich Show.”

Hanna’s journey to zoology began in his family’s bathtub in Knoxville, Tennessee where he raised bluegills and then extended his menagerie to their backyard. After college, Hanna, with support from his wife, Suzi, started a pet shop and petting zoo, worked for a wildlife adventure company, and directed a small state zoo. The couple’s subsequent move to Ohio (with their three daughters) was the start of Jack Hanna’s rise to stardom and role as a beloved spokesman for zoology and wildlife conservation.

Jack Hanna is a Professional Fellow of the American Zoo & Aquarium Association and a member of the Explorer’s Club. He is also an active supporter of Easter Seals and the Leukemia Society and serves on the boards of several educational institutions. While he takes all his civic responsibilities seriously, he maintains that wildlife conservation is his true calling. “Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures gives me the platform to excite people and get them to care about animals. For me, this is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.”

Learning Sessions

A hands-on learning session at the 2016 TN STEM Innovation Summit

The Innovation Summit features interactive learning sessions designed to stimulate participants’ thinking around a broad range of strategies used to integrate STEM in the classroom. The learning sessions are intended to provide attendees opportunities to interact with educational leaders and practitioners that are seeing success with STEM practices designed to raise student interest and achievement in STEM education.

This year’s theme, Connecting Classrooms to the World, allows us to explore how schools are integrating content into real-world settings, infusing unique business partnerships into the classroom, and providing experiential learning opportunities for students to more fully investigate the world around them through foundations in STEM education. It is vital that our classrooms connect young people to the knowledge and practices that inspire creative thinkers, innovators, and problem solvers that prepare them to accept the responsibilities of global citizenship in an ever changing world.

The learning session submission window has now closed. Thank you to all who submitted! Notifications will be made in March and session topics will be announced shortly thereafter.
